Resumo

This paper presents a low-cost, wireless, customizable and intuitive interface to interact with the environment through head movements, making it more comfortable for wheelchair users. This interface uses data from inertial sensors, attached to the user’s head, to infer the interaction intention withhome appliances such astelevision, radio, light bulbs, etc. Once the intention is detected, a wireless signal is transmitted to an electrical system (smart box) endowed with relays that connect to the home appliances. Tests were conductedby volunteers, with a good performance rate, making possible to turn on and off all the equipment tested in an efficient way. The goal of this work is to provide a practical system to improve the quality of life of wheelchair.
