Resumo

This dissertation presents a debate around the question “what is the symptom?” based on two distinct experiences in the field of clinical practice, one of psychoanalytic orientation and another one based on the scientistic psychiatry expressed in the DSM. His starting point is an examination of the emergence of the clinical method in medicine, the effects of its incursion into science, and the constitution of psychiatry as a field from a discourse about madness. It proposes a discussion about the DSM and its project for a scientific psychiatry, as well as its positioning before the psychopathology and the impasses introduced by the psychic suffering. Then analyzes the symbolic and “pulsional” dimensions of the symptom in Freud and in Lacan, and circumscribes the elements that allow us to affirm the ethical dimension of the symptom, an ethic founded on desire. In the end, concludes by pointing out that Freud delimits the ethical dimension of the psychic symptom as it encircles something unusual: the incidence of the sexual drive in its close relation to desire.
