This thesis aims at understanding the constitutive aspects of young adolescent students presence in an Adult and Youth Education (AYE) school in Vitória, capital city of Espírito Santo state (ES). Based on this investigation, it analyzes the routes these students went through until they got to the AYE learning mode, it questions the pedagogical relations constituted among adolescent students and the school professionals, and it also considers the AYE meaning for these students. It is a qualitative research that uses the action-research as investigative approach, as advocated by René Barbier. Its theoretical foundation is a dialogue of authors from many different fields of knowledge and comprehends a sociocultural approach of youth, the current legislation and Paulo Freire’s pedagogy of freedom. The data survey was conducted through field research and the procedures included semi structured interviews and the analysis of an itinerant journal, kept along the research. Six young adolescents enrolled at the state high school ‘EMEF “Admardo Serafim Oliveira”’ took part in this study. This is a school in Vitória (ES) which only offers AYE learning mode. The interviews were thoroughly transcribed and the data categorized in three thematic axes: the meaning of the adolescent student arrival to AYE, the specificities of being an adolescent student and being an adolescent student at AYE, and the interpersonal relations. The results led us to observe a general need for change of paradigm regarding the presence of the youth, or adolescence, at AYE by considering the aspects of the relationships built in the school environment and this audience’s specificities. Therefore, this thesis reveals the challenges presented on AYE’s everyday life regarding the amount of young adolescent students in its classrooms by considering this dialogue.
