Vinicius de Moraes, parceiros e amigos: relações entre amizade e música

Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between music and musical partnership in the work of Vinicius de Moraes. The friendship in adulthood has been investigated based on particular stages of development and gender. There are few studies correlating friendship and music, usually in childhood and adolescence. Based on the dialectical perspective of Robert Hinde on interpersonal relationships and the model proposed by Adams and Bliezsner regarding friendships among adults, this study aimed at analyzing the relationship between friendships and partnerships in the work of Vinicius de Moraes, in order to understand the relationship between interpersonal relationships and musical creation, with emphasis on four specific partners, such as Tom Jobim, Carlos Lyra, Baden Powell and Toquinho. The material for analysis were the lyrics of songs in partnership with the four authors above. In total, Vinicius de Moraes produced 44 songs with Tom Jobim, 39 with Baden Powell, 26 with Carlos Lyra and 75 with Toquinho. These compositions were subject to analysis of content and the songs composed with these four partners were compared for their content. The partnerships were treated as friendships, based on information available in historical documents such as letters and biographies. The results indicated different themes in these songs, as (a) the romantic love, (b) the woman, (c) values and lifestyles, (d) other relationships, (e) children's issues, (f) social and cultural issues, (g) music and dance, (h) human experience in a broader sense. These themes, whenever possible, were subdivided into subthemes to facilitate comparison between the partnerships. The relationships between the authors are considered as friendships having the shared interest in music as a central element. These friendships have different profiles. The paper still discusses the relationship between friendship and music, the contribution of the concept of cultural friendships, the relationship between friendships, cultural movements and culture, the possible contributions of studies of cultural friendships to understanding friendships in general, and the possibility of application of these data for education, through cultural clubs of friends.
