Abstract

There have been worldwide reports of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), indicating that the spread of resistance has become a major public health problem. A better understanding of the issues involved, including the risk factors for infection by these microorganisms, is therefore required. The aim of the present exploratory case-control study was to identify possible risk factors for acquisition of Enterobacterial strains with a marker for resistance to carbapenems. The study population consisted of patients with biological samples that tested positive for CRE with the disk diffusion test and Etest and controls with CRE-negative biological samples.
