Abstract

This research addresses the representation of the female body throughout art and media, highlighting genre differences in these expression forms. The study initiates with a brief historical analysis, seeking to comprehend how the female body has been represented throughout time, highlighting the influence of these cultural norms in the construction of these rep resentations. The research then explores the influence that media has in the distortion of the female self image, examining in which way images shown in media outlets may effect the perception that women have of themselves. Finally, we seek to discuss on h ow the notions of "technical images" and the "society of appliances", as conceptualized by Vilém Flusser, the power that the image has on contemporary society, raising important matters on the role of photography as an autonomous language in the construct ion of stereotyped images of the female body, as well as a means to question and transform these representations.
