O Karaíba: uma história do pré-Brasil, de Daniel Munduruku. A voz da resistência indígena brasileira em tradução

Abstract

The main purpose of this research is to present an unpublished translation of the novel O Karaíba: uma história do pré-Brasil by the indigenous writer Daniel Munduruku, in order to contribute to the spreading of the contemporary Brazilian indigenous literature in Italy. Analysing the literary production of indigenous writers, we can offer to the audience a not biased and stereotypical image of the native people. The indigenous authors, with their literary works, give a voice to their history and culture that were silenced since the arrival of Portuguese settlers to the lands that we now call Brazil. Before the translation, there is a theoretical- critical framework that contextualizes the translated novel and the birth of indigenous literature in Brazil, emphasizing the power of writing as a form of resistance against centuries of cultural annihilation. The translation is based on studies dedicated to the translation of children’s literature and on the main post- colonial translation theories that allowed us to have an ethical approach during the translating process as a way of respecting and keeping the other in translation.
