This dissertation proposes the modeling of a stand-alone hybrid system, composed of photovoltaic plant and proton exchange membrane fuel cell using PSCAD software. The text presents a review about key concepts related to photovoltaic energy and fuel cells, besides of presenting work related that motivates the accomplishment of this study. The photovoltaic module is modeled from a datasheet provided by the manufacturer, while the fuel cell has its model based on an earlier study. To guarantee the amount of power necessary to the system, series-parallel associations of photovoltaic modules and of fuel cells are made. The modeling of the hybrid system, that include inverters, buck converter and LCL filters, as well the strategy of control used are presented in details. The sources supply the loads in the standalone hybrid system. However, the fuel cell’s subsystem only provide power when the photovoltaic subsystem are not able to supply the energy demand. Because the system is isolated and the photovoltaic source has the characteristic of being intermittent, the reference for the control strategy arise from the fuel cell’s subsystem. The simulations are executed in order to verify the dynamic functioning of the stand-alone hybrid system through solar radiation and load changes.
