Resumo
The objective of the research is to investigate the potential of maps circulating on social media for teaching Geography in High School, as an initial approach to School Cartography and Viral Cartography. Methodologically, a theoretical debate was conducted on the relationship between Geography and social media, and a workshop was held with students from an educational institution in the municipality of Santa Maria, State of Rio Grande do Sul, who interpreted four viral maps. The students pointed out that they spend 10% of their days on social media, consume little content related to Geography and maps, and when they come across Geography posts, they prefer those related to curiosities and memes. Regarding the viral maps, the students observed the absence of cartographic elements, which caused problems in cartographic communication and the potential to generate fake news. Finally, it is emphasized that viral maps can be elements to make Geography lessons more engaging and promote aspects of Cartographic Literacy through cyberspace.
