It seeks to understand the successful trajectory in the mathematics discipline of a group of four elementary school students from an interior school in the city of Colatina-ES, who were medalists of the Brazilian Public Schools Mathematics Olympiad. It also intends to find out which phenomena can explain this good performance in mathematics and which educational strategies used in the school environment contributed to these results. Thus, it opts for a qualitative methodology, defined by a case study that aims to answer descriptive and interpretative questions. For data collection, semi-structured interviews were applied to the four students who studied the whole Elementary School together, the two teachers who accompanied the students in the final years of Elementary School and the principal of the school where the students studied. As theoretical assumptions sought some authors, such as: Moreira (2000), Ausubel (1963), Chervel (1998), Julia (2001) and D'Ambrósio (2012 ). In addition, official documents such as the National Curriculum Parameters (BRASIL, 1997) and the Common National Curriculum Base (BRASIL, 2017) were used as a research source to guide information on Basic Education. Through the categorization applied to the qualitative analysis of the collected data (GIL, 2014), it sought evidence on the teaching practice of teachers, the school environment, the habits and routine of student studies, factors that emerged and gave this group of students the highlight in mathematics and, consequently, their awards at OBMEP. The field research was carried out and is currently in the analysis phase of the collected data, falling into the following categories: The school environment, Teachers' teaching methods, Extraclass activities, Brazilian Public Schools Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP).
