The objective of this work is to check how the newspaper A Província do Espirito Santo treated the phenomenon of immigration that happened during the 19th Century. And, therefore, the approach of such immigration handled in it. By using the clue method proposed by Ginzburg (1989), we, randomly, chose all the material regarding immigration found in the newspaper (topics, reportings, notes, articles, editorials, governmental reports, etc.). Not only those regarding the immigration to Brazil and to Espírito Santo, but also those refering to the phenomenon of immigration that was taking place worldwide. Our analyses began in 1882, when A Província do Espirito Santo started its work in the capixaba printing press; and finished in 1889, when the newspaper had its name changed to Diário do Espirito Santo on account of the Brazilian Proclamation of the Republic (later on the Estado do Espirito Santo). The biggest immigration movements to Brazil were sponsored by the government. This sponsorship started during the second half of the 19th Century. Most of them being from Europe. The aim was to bring workers qualified to substitute the slaves that were engaged in agricultural work and to do the necessary tasks in industries and to the economic development. A Província do Espírito Santo, published in Vitória, is one of the most important newspapers of its time. Is to check the speech this newspaper published regarding the phenomenon of the immigration and its implications.
