Resumo

This study aims to analyze the possibilities of an emancipatory education in Youth and Adult Education (EJA), especially with regard to students with autism enrolled in the 1st and 2nd segment of this modality, in the city of Vitória/ES. It is supported by Paulo Freire’s socio-liberating theory, focusing especially on the concepts of awareness and emancipation in the process of social transformation. Following a qualitative methodological approach, it carried out a descriptive and analytical study of documents, electronic records and interviews with teachers of students with autism enrolled in the 1st and 2nd segments of EJA, in the city of Vitória/ES. Thus, it discusses historical and political aspects of EJA and Special Education in the municipality; discusses the data on Special Education for young people and adults present in the School Management System, as well as the work of the specialized teacher. The analysis points to advances in efforts to organize an emancipatory education in EJA and to meet the educational needs of students diagnosed with autism. However, there is still a long way to go for this emancipatory education to take effect.
