This dissertation aims at performing a genealogical analysis of the Panic Disorder category, as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - 5th edition. It investigates the connections between the Panic Disorder and the notion of anguish, as well as makes it evident the transformations that have occurred in the field of psychiatry from the 19th to the 21st century. It analyzes the emergence of psychiatric knowledge from general medicine and keeps up with the inclusion process of the notion of anguish to the discourse of Classical Psychiatry. It examines the historical events that culminated in the consolidation of Biological Psychiatry, points out the transformations that occurred in the DSM's and the ways which allowed for the appearance of the Panic Disorder. And, with the aid of the concept of diagram proposed by Deleuze, it presents an analysis of the relations of forces that are generated and form a network of interconnections that culminate in the invention of the Panic Disorder. The paper concludes with the statement that Panic Disorder updates a misplaced affection of anguish in favor of the biologizing and reductionist discourse that currently prevails in psychiatric discourse
