Resumo

In an urban context marked by inequality, violence rates grow and criminal conduct, such as homicides, which shock much of Brazilian society, become commonplace. In this research, we intend to indicate a connection between geography and criminality, using as reference the official data referring to intentional lethal crimes and crimes against property. A discussion of the urbanization process of capitalist cities is found in this work, this process was experienced by the municipalities of the Metropolitan Region of Grande Vitória (RMGV), which can be seen through the various heterogeneous territories of the city and the mapping of crimes. After presenting the brief discussion of urbanization, we sought through spatial analysis, to understand the pattern of spatial and temporal distribution of certain types of crimes and how these crimes can be understood as an aspect, a face of violence that characterizes the rapid process of ostensive urbanization of the cities of the RMGV in recent decades. Geography appears to understand the process of occupation of the city, from the territory and contributes to explain the higher incidence of certain types of crimes in certain areas of the city. The data analysis reveals that the places farther from the city centers are the areas where more crimes against the person occurred, and in the central areas the crimes against property gain prominence.
