O abismo do inexplicável : uma leitura das múltiplas mortes em Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas, de Machado de Assis

Abstract

This dissertation aims to understand how death is set in the novel Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (1881), by Machado de Assis. In this text it is expected to deduce the purpose of the choice of this theme for the work, as well as to observe in what way the end of life presents itself to characters occupying different social spheres. Also will seek to ascertain why some deaths seem to affect more intensely Brás Cubas, as the death of his mother. For both, the approach with the psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud is of fundamental importance to recognize brands (though subtle) demonstrating the value of the mother figure to the protagonist. The investigation of the perception of the role of death to humanity, the presence of death in the machadiana production, the differences in the deaths of representatives of the ruling classes and dominated-being some of them raise a panorama of symbolic route to be trodden in this search for understanding of this "abyss of unexplainable".
