Resumo

The objective was to prospect Lyssavirus and Leishmania spp. in bats from Espírito Santo, Brazil, from 2015 to 2019. The experiments were approved by CEUA-UFES, protocol 65/2017. In the first experiment, for Lyssavirus prospecting, 26 bats from the Molossidae, Phyllostomidae and Vespertilionidae families found dead in the Sooretama-ES Biological Reserve from 2015 to 2018 were used. Brain samples were sent to the IDAF Rabies Diagnostic Laboratory, where they performed Direct immunofluorescence tests and biological testing with intracerebral inoculation in mice were performed. Two bats had impossible results and 24 had negative results, ruling out rabies as the cause of death of these animals. Although Lyssavirus has not been detected in bats of the Sooretama Biological Reserve, the possibility of occurrence in the region cannot be ruled out. In the second experiment, for the prospecting of Leishmania spp., 105 bats belonging to the families Molossidae and Phyllostomidae from 17 municipalities were provided by the IDAF Rabies Diagnostic Laboratory. A total of 95 spleen cytology slides, DNA extractions and conventional PCR were evaluated from 99 bone marrow, 105 skin and 95 spleen samples. Leishmania species were identified by PCR-RFLP with Hae III enzyme. Positive results for Leishmania spp. Were observed by PCR in five (4.76%) bats: one from Eumops glaucinus skin from Vitória, two from bone marrow, one from Artibeus lituratus from Vila Velha and one from E. glaucinus from Vitória, and two spleen samples, one from A. lituratus from Vitória and one from Molossus rufus from Guarapari. Positive amplicons refer to Leishmania braziliensis. In this study, according to the literature, Leishmania was first detected in bats in Espírito Santo
