The work of the expert medical social security has grown in importance and quantity in recent years in Brazil. One consequence of this is that the complaints have also increased, both by experts-doctors, and by policyholders, which suggests that this relationship full of conflict. This study presents results of a qualitative research carried out with twelve doctors-experts of the Agency of Social Security Disability Benefits (APSBI) in Vitoria, ES. Use as research tools observations of daily work and interviews based on semi-structured. The research aimed to investigate the organization of work of the medical expert at the Agency of Social Security Disability Benefits (APSBI) in Vitoria-ES and its implications, especially in your health. The data were analyzed according to a prescribed content analysis of Bardin (2009), in its aspect of thematic analysis. The results reveal difficulties in performing the work expert, with effects on behavior and health professionals, the mental suffering it entails. The main one is always perceived as imminent violence, sometimes real, but always frightening. These implications lead experts to develop and use various psychological defense mechanisms, both individual and collective. This study indicates the need for Social Security to review the pattern of investment in specific training of the medical experts, given the characteristics of expert activity, clarify policyholders and doctors about this activity and reset the policy guidelines for the granting of benefits.
