Resumo

The monzitic sand of Guarapari- ES- Brazil is formed by a combination of rare elements. Among the elements that make it up is thorium, which is a radioactive element. This study investigated the interaction between gamma radiation from thorium and 304L steel. In the study on 304L steel sheets, the presence of residual stress due to plastic deformation was verified in a cold rolling process. These stress present a profile along the thickness of the sheet. The work described here investigated the effect of an accumulated dose of 200mGy on the residual stress profile of a 304L steel sample. The method uses for this investigation was the X-ray diffraction method. Its scope could be expanded by concomitant use of electropolishing for successive incremental removal of material, making it possible to obtain the residual stress profile. Residual stress were determined by the sin²ψ technique, using a diffractometer with a CuKα radiation source (λ=0.1542nm). In conclusion, it was found that there was no influence of natural radiation in monazite sand on the profile and residual stress values of irradiated sample, which means that the exposure of 304L steel to radiation of 200 mGy of gamma radiation was not high enough to change the residual stress of the steel, considering the configurations used in this work.
