This research seeks to understand the male violence that is inscribed in the relationship of the subject with the social bond, investigating the fictitious character of masculinity to put in check the man and his virility. The methodology used was theoretical-conceptual, articulating the historicity of male violence, psychoanalysis, and gender studies. From the observation of the exponent increase in violence against women in recent years, clinical reports of women who face this issue and concomitant to the strengthening of the feminist discourse, expressions of male violence are initially raised in the current Brazilian scenario. Then, a brief historical contextualization of the construction of the myth of virile man and the emergence of feminism as a subversive political movement is made. From this, psychoanalysis is summoned bringing the fictitious character of masculinity in texts of Freud and Lacan; it explores the phallus as semblant that establishes a rigid mode of jouissance, adhered to heteronormativity. Finally, possible interlocutions are presented to think about male violence between psychoanalysis, gender studies and public policies. Initiatives are also brought with educational and reflective groups among men who seek to build new ways of experiencing masculinity in a more plural and open to other ways. It was found that virile masculinity is instituted through rituals and violent practices, which is based on the rejection and inferiorization (emasculate) of everything that is considered feminine. The contribution of psychoanalysis occurs not only through the clinic, but through criticism in dialogue with feminist movements and with public policies. It shows us that the manly masculine character is nothing but a fiction, a semblance that strives to hide castration, unbearable to man.
