Resumo

This dissertation emerged from concerns I experienced as a citizen and female communicator in the cities of Mariana and Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil, both heavily impacted by mining activities. The focal point of this research is the photographic series "The Other Side of the Mountain" by the Minas Gerais-based photographer José Luiz Pederneira, consisting of 25 images. The study categorizes the images into representations of the mountain and the sea, employing diverse frames to illustrate mining activities. The methodology used is an imageinterpretative study of "The Other Side of the Mountain," where selected photos are juxtaposed with other artistic and literary works. The objective is analyzing the impacts of mining and the underlying notions of progress and development associated with this industry, with a critical perspective. The dissertation comprises three essays, or writing movements. The first essay reflects on the ruins left by the notion of progress, examining this through the lens of the photographic concept of imaginary photodocumentary, drawing on works by José Luiz Pederneiras and other photographers. The second essay explores the intersection of the mountain and its ruins with other art forms, such as painting. Lastly, the third essay delves into the sea, the ultimate destination of mining, reflecting on the intricate relationship between mining activities and the sea, also throug image analysis.
