Inspetoria de higiene pública do Espírito Santo: políticas de assistência à saúde em tempos de epidemias

Abstract

Uses a documentation of the Public Hygiene Inspection of the Espírito Santo,destined to establish the public health policies during the second half of the nineteenth century. The manuscripts analyzed to study documentary history are part of the public documental collection of the State of Espírito Santo (APEES). Through the institutional manuscripts of the 800's last decade, rescues specifically the actions of the Inspection of Public Hygiene in front of the capixaba society, in the period that epidemics of yellow fever, cholera and smallpox became notorious in most of the territory of the Espirito Santo. Investigates the Hygiene Inspector, Ernesto Mendo, influential doctor and important figure of the capixaba hygiene in the 19th century . The results demonstrate the hygienic institution's pioneerism to develop health care policies in the municipalities through the establishment of Municipal Hygiene Stations
