The present dissertation analyzes the transformations undergone by the phonographic industry after both the advent of the Internet and the exchange of online digital music. While economic goods carry characteristics of private consumption goods, whose access is determined by payment, the music industry was dominated by large multinational companies which operated in various media segments, such as Journalism and Cinema. The digitization and pirate distribution of phonograms led to an alteration of economic goods, which turned into collective consumption goods, where the free access does not generate income. In the early twentieth first century, several multinational media conglomerates suffered losses due to the selling of recorded music. Through a historiographical survey on the consolidation of the music market, together with an analysis of the network economics, transaction costs and information economics, this paper aims at understanding the phenomenon previously described.
