Resumo

The objective of this study was to identify, describe and analyze the social representations of wilderness groups of residents hinterland, through the Central Nucleus Theory. Referenced in this theory, the research was conducted in three interrelated studies: Study 1 (E1) addressed the social representations of wilderness between young and old residents of the hinterland region Petrolina-PE Juazeiro - BA and was attended by 60 young people between 18 and 25 years and older, the age of 60, the Study 2 (E2) investigated the social representations of the cities of Petrolina-PE and Juazeiro - BA from data collected from 120 subjects, 60 between 18 and 25 years and aged from 60 to 60 years, the Study 3 (E3) examined the social representations of wilderness between student-teachers of undergraduate courses in History and Geography, 30 LH and 30 LG. For data collection, was applied interview with open questions and the test of free association of words. The processing of corporate data was performed using the software TextSTAT, EVOC and ACS, as well as content analysis, according to the objectives of each study and the nature of the data. The results showed that the contents of social representation of wilderness reproduces the traditional way of thinking about the region, with a prominent role for the elements drought, poverty and misery, leading participants to declare that the site is not live interior, because it is economically developed . It is emphasized that the discourse of economic development becomes legitimized and social inequality invisible.
