This research proposes to realize an analysis of the Brazilian forestry policy implemented between the years 2004 and 2019 from the perspective of Ecological Economics, in order to verify whether the existing forestry legislation in Brazil is effective and is being implemented in order to combat the deforestation properly. To this end, the present work has unraveled the theory about forest sustainability, revisited the structure of the Brazilian environmental policy, created an overview of the laws and measures regarding forests taken by government officials and, finally, collected and analyzed data on deforestation and the fires provided by governmental and non-governmental entities. The research pointed out that even though there were improvements in the indexes during the first years of the analysis, which corresponded to 2004 to 2011, this performance did not continue, presenting higher indexes in the years 2012 to 2019. Thus, an urgent need for change in the profile of forestry policies used in recent years in Brazil, aiming at a stricter stance and a more effective fight against the problem of deforestation in the country.
