Abstract

There is need to identify the potential of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and the importance of environmental services in tropical forests and the contribution to the development of traditional communities. The objective, in this study, was to evaluate the potential of production of NTFPs and the environmental valuation of a national forest (NF) in the south of the Espírito Santo. Were used images of Landsat 8 to classify land use and occupation in NF and its buffer zone (BZ). Forms were applied in a sample of 78 families residing in the community of Monte Alegre, located at BZ of the NF of Pacotuba with issues emphasizing socioeconomic characteristics, ethnobotanical survey and environmental services. It was found that at NF of Pacotuba there is potential for producing NTFPs. Fragmentation of native forest is considered significant in the buffer zone and the the interviewed have a willingness to receive for the conservation of environmental services
